Four-wheel drive combine harvesters are more and more popular, meeting farmers’ need to be as effective as possible when harvesting, even when soil conditions are not optimal. Poclain Hydraulics has developed an on-demand hydraulic transmission for muddy conditions and harvesting on slopes.

Poclain Hydraulics has developed an on-demand hydraulic transmission that powers the rear axle, providing the additional flotation and traction needed for harvesting in muddy conditions and/or on slopes. Poclain’s hydraulic 4WD not only prevents the combine harvesters from getting stuck, but also helps farmers boost their productivity and decrease the TCO:

  • The 4WD is activated only when needed, without impacting fuel consumption when used in 2WD
  • The system improves the machine’s steerability on all soil conditions, bringing the best-in-class steering angle
  • Faster mobility with the benefit of reduced soil compaction - better machine controllability especially on machines using front tracks
  • Low maintenance:
    • Reduce tire wear
    • High ground clearance prevents machine damage

The solution is easy to integrate and compatible with a wide range of combine harvesters: from small to the largest machines. The solution is based on free-wheeling technology inherent to Poclain motor technology (radial pistons) and mastered with more than 30 years of field experience.

    • Wheel motors: no need for complex mechanical arrangement to manage variable width - just need pipes connection with the motors

  • Freewheeling the rear axle allows:
    • 2WD operation when field conditions are favorable
    • 2WD operation when high speed is required for road transport
    • 2WD operation without parasitic motor losses
    • 4WD operation at field operating speeds when extra traction force is required
    • Reduced pump size compared to a fulltime 4WD configuration
  • Freewheeling valve - used between the pump and rear axle motors to:
    • Isolate the rear axle motors from the pump when in 2WD
    • Connect the rear axle motors to the pump when in 4WD
